How do people find my business on the web?

What are your customers searching on the web? The likelihood is that they are not searching for your business by name, so let’s be creative and include information on our website that our customers might actually be looking for.

For example, an accounting firm has a page on their website that outlines their ‘Tax Return preparation’ service. Do you think their customers are searching ‘Tax Return preparation’ or are they searching ‘How to save on tax’?

Have a think about it and then do some research. There are free services you can use to see how often certain keywords are searched per day, and if you pay for the full version of the software you can even see how much competition there is for those searches. This should give you an idea of what your customers are looking for. Just remember that there can be a lot of competition for certain keywords so try and think out of the square on this one.

Keywords are extremely important on your website. Ensure the heading of each page on your site includes the keywords your customers are searching. Then include these keywords in the first paragraph, and hopefully use them again a few more times in the body of your text. Search Engines will use keyword density (ie. How often the keywords appear on a page) to decide where to rank your site. Don’t be too generous with the keywords though as they are making search engines smarter and smarter and they are slowly figuring out when they are being tricked.
